Description
An internet speed test is a free analysis of a device's connection to the internet, which is measured in Mbps (megabits per second) and latency. A speed test measures the speed between your specific device and a test server, using your device's internet connection.
How to perform a Speed Test
Below is a list of various websites to test your internet connection:

How to receive the most accurate Speed Test results
For the most accurate internet speed test results:
- Perform speed tests from a desktop computer or workstation. This will provide the most accurate internet speed coming from your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
- Test from multiple computers or workstations.
- Test multiple servers provided by the speed test website that you have chosen.
- Avoid using a wireless device (smartphone, tablet, or laptop) connected to the Wi-Fi. These speed test results are highly inaccurate and have added factors that can affect the results.
*WARNING* Do not disconnect any existing Ethernet cables or Patch cables from any networking equipment. This could cause the network to be unstable or lose internet connectivity entirely.
Factors that can impact Internet Speed Test results
Several factors can impact the speed recorded by a test:
- Devices (phones, tablets, PCs, etc...) can have very different Wi-Fi and cellular radio capabilities. This means you might get one speed test result on one device and a different result on another, even using the same internet service provider. Select devices may not be able to measure the full speed of your internet service.
- Speed test servers may perform differently. Generally, you will get faster speeds from servers geographically closer to you. This helps provide a more accurate result of your internet speed test. We recommend testing a variety of test servers to get the most complete picture of your speed. Each website lists a variety of test servers that vary in geographic location.
- Browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, etc...) have different capabilities and may provide different results, particularly on high-speed connections.
- Ongoing downloads will impact the results of a speed test (i.e., computer back-ups, streaming music/television, updating software, etc...)
Why am I getting different speeds between my computer/laptop and my phone/tablet?
A speed test is measuring your real-time network connection, tests taken within a few minutes of each other may vary based on network congestion and available bandwidth. If your speed test results are significantly different, make sure that you are:
- Testing the same connection. If one device is on Wi-Fi and the other is not, you are testing the speeds of different connections.
- Testing to the same server. Speed tests automatically select servers to test to based on location, but can also select a server that is not the most optimal.
