How to Reboot Your Internet Cable Modem

Cable Modems sometime needs to be restarted, especially after outages occur or if it's believed that there is trouble with your Internet Connectivity.

To help you identify your modem, here are some examples:

Identifying Your Modem

The cable modem is supplied by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) (e.g., Spectrum, Verizon FiOS, Optimum, Frontier). To ensure you are restarting the correct device, refer to the list below to identify your modem manufacturer:

  • Arris

  • Motorola

  • Cisco

  • Technicolor

  • Ubee

Steps to Restart Your Cable Internet Modem

Identify the Modem

Confirm the device you are about to restart is the cable modem, not the router or any other connected equipment.

Power Down the Modem

  1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the modem.

  2. To confirm the modem is completely powered off, check that all light indicators on the device are off.

  3. Wait for 30 Seconds

Reconnect the Modem

  1. Reconnect the power cord to the modem.

Allow the Modem to Reboot

  1. Wait 2 to 5 minutes for the modem to fully boot up.

  2. During this time, the light indicators may flash or remain solid as the modem re-establishes a connection.

Test Your Internet Connection

  1. Attempt to connect to the network by browsing to multiple websites.
